Trip overview

Sar Pass is a high-altitude crossing in Himachal Pradesh's Parvati Valley. This six-day itinerary begins in Kasol, climbs through Grahan, Min Thach and Nagaru, then crosses the pass before descending through Biskeri Thach to Barshaini. The landscape changes from village paths and woodland to open camping grounds and exposed upper slopes. Expect sustained uphill walking, cold nights and a demanding crossing day. Snow cover and trail conditions vary with the season, so the daily plan remains subject to weather and the trek leader's assessment.

Your day-by-day itinerary

Follow the route from your reporting point to the final descent. Camps and timings may change with mountain conditions.

01Day 1Reporting at Kasol Base Camp and Acclimatization walk

Arrive at the Kasol base camp and use the first day to settle in before the walking stages begin. Complete registration, check your backpack and attend the team's briefing. A short local walk is planned to ease into the terrain. Confirm the walk's timing on arrival and rest before the next day's climb. Base altitude: approximately 5,183 ft; walking distance and duration depend on the local plan.

Views from the trek route

02Day 2Trek to Grahan

Leave Kasol for Grahan, following woodland and riverside sections before the steeper approach to the village. Keep a steady pace rather than rushing the early kilometres, and carry the water and day essentials advised at the briefing. The first full trekking day introduces the route's sustained climbs. Planned stage: approximately 9 km in 5–6 hours; Grahan altitude around 7,700 ft.

03Day 3Grahan to Min Thach

Continue uphill from Grahan towards Min Thach as the route moves from forest into more open ground. This stage involves a substantial gain in height, so allow time for the group to move together and take the breaks set by the leader. Keep a warm layer accessible for stops and arrival at camp. Planned stage: approximately 6 km in 6–7 hours; camp altitude around 11,100 ft.

04Day 4Min Thach to Nagaru

Climb from Min Thach to Nagaru on a shorter but steeper stage. Rocky ground and seasonal snow can make progress slower than the distance suggests. Follow the leader's foot placements and equipment guidance, and keep essential layers protected from moisture. Use the afternoon to rest and prepare for the pass crossing. Planned stage: approximately 4 km in about 5 hours; camp altitude around 12,700 ft.

05Day 5Nagaru to Sar Pass to Biskeri Thach

Start early from Nagaru for the crossing of Sar Pass, then descend towards Biskeri Thach. This is the longest planned walking day and requires careful pacing through the upper terrain. Snow, visibility and weather determine the line and timing chosen by the leader. Keep snacks, water and protective layers accessible. Planned stage: approximately 9 km in 8–9 hours; highest point around 13,800 ft. The crossing remains subject to safe conditions.

06Day 6Biskeri Thach to Barshaini

Descend from Biskeri Thach through woodland and village paths towards Barshaini. Although the route loses height, tired legs still need careful footing, especially on uneven or wet sections. Stay with the group until the walking stage is complete and check the onward transport plan before leaving. Planned stage: approximately 6 km in about 5 hours; endpoint altitude around 7,800 ft. Allow a travel buffer for your return journey.

Getting to the trail

Reporting point

Report at the Kasol base camp on Day 1 for registration, equipment checks and the route briefing. Obtain the exact camp location and reporting time from Sapta Shikhar before arranging your arrival.

By air

Kullu-Manali Airport at Bhuntar is the local airport for this valley. From Bhuntar, arrange onward road travel to Kasol. Check current flight availability and allow time for delays before the trek's reporting day.

By road

Reach Kasol by road from Delhi or Chandigarh, either on a service that terminates in Kasol or by connecting through Bhuntar. Check the actual bus stop and arrival time when booking. Keep a travel buffer because mountain-road delays can affect reporting.

Final transfer

The walking itinerary ends at Barshaini on Day 6. Confirm whether a Barshaini-to-Kasol transfer is included in your departure and how it will be arranged. Leave enough time for the descent and road journey before booking an onward connection.

Prepare for your trek

Build walking endurance gradually before departure. Include regular brisk walks, uphill routes or stairs, and practice carrying the daypack you plan to use. Break in your trekking shoes beforehand. Aim to feel comfortable with several hours of walking on consecutive days; the crossing day is longer than the other stages.

Route safety

Upper sections can involve snow, steep gradients and exposed terrain. Walk with the group and follow the leader's route and equipment instructions. Report discomfort or difficulty early. Weather, snow and trail conditions may require a change of campsite, a delayed crossing or a turnaround; completing the pass is never guaranteed.

How much walking is planned?

The listed Day 2 to Day 6 stages total about 34 km, excluding the Day 1 walk. Distances are approximate and can change with the trail or campsite used.

Can a first-time trekker consider Sar Pass?

A prepared beginner can consider this route, but should be comfortable with sustained climbs, consecutive walking days and camping. Discuss your preparation and eligibility with the team before booking.

Is snow guaranteed on the route?

No. Snow cover depends on the departure date and that season's weather. The upper route may change if conditions are unsafe.

Which day is the longest?

Day 5, from Nagaru across Sar Pass to Biskeri Thach, is planned as the longest stage at approximately 8–9 hours. Actual time depends on pace and conditions.

Will I have charging and mobile reception at every camp?

Do not rely on either facility throughout the route. Carry a power bank and keep essential booking and travel information available offline.

Are transfers and rentals included?

Confirm these separately for your departure. Availability, charges and any deposit should be provided by the team before payment.

What happens if the route changes because of weather?

The trek leader may change the plan or stop the crossing for safety. Ask for the departure's written terms covering itinerary changes, cancellation and refunds before booking.

How difficult is the Sar Pass Trek?

The Sar Pass Trek is graded moderate. The highest point is about 13,800 ft (4,206 m). The longest walking day (Day 2) is about 9 km, 5-6 hours. It suits fit beginners and people with some trekking experience; start cardio training (running, stairs, long walks) 6–8 weeks before.

What is the cost of the Sar Pass Trek?

₹6,999 per person (5% GST extra) for 6 days / 5 nights from Kasol. It includes shared trail tents for two participants; triple or quadruple sharing at base camp, breakfast, lunch, evening snacks and dinner as listed in the departure package, forest-entry and campsite permissions and trek leadership and campsite support. Not included: backpack offloading or porter charges, personal purchases and expenses and emergency-related costs.

How do I choose my first Himalayan trek?

Compare the maximum altitude, walking hours, daily climbs and season. Short forest routes such as Nag Tibba can be a starting point, but even a weekend trek needs fitness and weather preparation.

What equipment should I carry?

Carry broken-in trekking shoes, a backpack, warm layers, a waterproof shell, sun protection, a headlamp, refillable water bottles and personal medicines. Confirm which camp equipment and snow gear are included before departure.

How should I prepare physically?

What should I confirm before booking?

Ask for dated availability, the final itinerary, group size, guide qualifications, inclusions, exclusions, transfer arrangements and cancellation terms in writing. A route guide does not guarantee an operating departure.
